England World Cup squad: Trent Alexander-Arnold PICKED by Gareth Southgate for Russia | Football | Sport

Alexander-Arnold has enjoyed a remarkable breakout season with Liverpool and Champions League glory could still be on the cards.

His campaign won’t finish in Kiev on May 26 though with England boss Gareth Southgate including the right-back in his plans for the World Cup.

Express Sport understands Alexander-Arnold will be selected in Southgate’s 23-man party which will be announced at 1pm today.

And that is likely to spell bad news for Kieran Trippier, whose end to the season with Tottenham was marred by a knee problem.

Alexander-Arnold could start at right wing-back in England’s first World Cup match against Tunisia on June 18 if Kyle Walker remains part of the back three.

And he might join Liverpool team-mate Jordan Henderson in that starting XI, with Adam Lallana potentially set to be included as well.

Alexander-Arnold’s anticipated call-up represents a remarkable rise for the 19-year-old, who only made his Under-21s debut against Latvia last September.

Southgate’s faith in the uncapped Alexander-Arnold is a reflection of his decision to pick players on form rather than experience or reputation.

There have already been two high-profile casualties of that policy: Joe Hart and Jack Wilshere.

Hart, who has 75 caps, is set to watch the tournament from home after a dismal season on loan at West Ham from Manchester City.

Jordan Pickford, Jack Butland and Nick Pope are the goalkeeping options Gareth Southgate will have at his disposal instead.

Wilshere, meanwhile, has not played for England since Euro 2016 and will not add to his 34 caps at this summer’s World Cup.

Express Sport understands Fabian Delph, a title-winner with City this season, will travel to Russia in the Arsenal midfielder’s place.

England will prepare for their Group G fixtures against Tunisia, Panama and Belgium by facing Nigeria and Costa Rica at the start of next month.
